Faculty researchers awarded Research Week honours

Faculty of Medicine researcher Dr Sherry Wu and Centre for Health Services Research Director  Professor Len Gray have been recognised for their outstanding contributions to their fields at The University of Queensland Research Week awards.

Dr Wu was awarded a Foundation Research Excellence Award for her work developing effective strategies for detection and treatment of ovarian cancers.

“I feel extremely honoured to be granted this award for my research,” Dr Wu said.

“This research aims to address the most lethal form of gynaecologic malignancy, ovarian cancer, which has a five year survival rate of only 35-40 per cent.

“The high recurrence rate presents a major challenge in the clinical management of the disease.”

It is anticipated that Dr Wu’s research outcomes will be relevant for treatment of other types of cancer.

Dr Gray received an award for the development of a program designed to slash paperwork for nurses, leaving them more time for patient care.

The digital RAIsoft Acute Care System, licensed by UQ commercialisation company UniQuest, has been successfully trialled at Brisbane’s QEII Jubilee Hospital.

Professor Gray said the system generated assessment scores and triggered referrals to allied health services as needed.

“It makes clinical handover between shifts efficient and effective, reduces reporting requirements and provides timely information for targeted patient care,” he said.

“Longer term, it engages the whole health care team in continuous improvement of patient care, reduces readmissions and improves collaboration within and between hospitals.”
