US Residency Match Day success

16 March 2019

Medical graduates of The University of Queensland Ochsner Doctor of Medicine Program celebrated 2019 Match Day with a 93 per cent Match Rate which marks the seventh year in a row that the program’s Match Rate has been 90 per cent or above.

Ochsner Health System Chief Academic Officer Associate Professor Leonardo Seoane said Match Day was the culmination of years of hard work and dedication.

“Our Match Rate is a testament to the high quality of our students, our faculty and staff and our program, which is celebrating its 10-year anniversary this year,” Dr Seoane said.

“We are proud to offer a graduate medical program that spans two continents and provides students with a unique and global perspective as they train to be medical professionals.

“As we reflect on the last 10 years, it’s incredibly rewarding that our overall Match Rate throughout the history of the program is comparable with the average for other U.S. medical schools.”

This year, 85 UQ Ochsner medical graduates participated in the National Residency Match Program – a rite of passage in which medical school students from around the globe learn who has been selected or matched to a U.S. residency program for the next chapter of medical training.

Graduates matched into residency training programs at many prestigious institutions across the country, including Ochsner Health System, Johns Hopkins, Beth Isreal Deaconess Medical Center, University of Chicago, University of Southern California, University of Texas-Houston, and University of Vermont Medical Center, to name a few.

Matches were in a variety of specialties including Anesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Family and Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Neurology, OB/GYN, Pathology, Paediatrics, and Physical Medicine and Rehab and Psychiatry.

UQ Ochsner Clinical School Head and Dean of Medical Education at Ochsner Health System Dr Ronald Amedee said the White Coat Ceremony, Graduation, and Match Day were three important days in the life of an aspiring physician.

“We are proud of the success our students have had year over year, matching with high caliber residency programs both here in Louisiana and across the country,” Dr Amedee said.
