University of Queensland researchers have received a Ramaciotti Health Investment Grant for investigating precision medicine for head and neck cancer.
Dr Arutha Kulasinghe from UQ’s Frazer Institute and the Queensland Spatial Biology Centre will use the grant to investigate head and neck caner tumours.
“We are aiming to create an incredibly detailed map of the cells that make up head and neck cancer.
“This means examining the tumours at a microscopic level to understand every cell and how they interact with their neighbours.
“We can think of this process as zooming into the tumour with a really high-powered lens to uncover the secrets hidden in every corner.”
Dr Kulasinghe said he and his team are hoping to gain a deeper understanding of how head and neck cancer tumours respond to treatment.
“We will create cellular atlases associated with therapy responsiveness and resistance.
“We hope our research leads to better understanding of head and neck cancer and how it responds to certain treatments.
“We are looking forward to building these world-first tissue maps for head and neck cancer,” he said.
