The Australian Medical Association (AMA) has recognised two members of the Faculty of Medicine in the 2024 AMA awards.

Anaesthetist, researcher and teacher, Professor Andre Van Zundert, was awarded the AMA 2024 Excellence in Healthcare Award in recognition of his commitment to medicine, research, teaching and volunteering.

Professor Van Zundert said he was grateful for the recognition.

“Receiving the Australian Medical Association 2024 Excellence in Healthcare Award feels like winning Olympic gold, Professor Van Zundert said.

“It's a moment of immense pride and validation, underscoring the crucial role anaesthetists play in delivering safe and effective anaesthesia.

“This award celebrates not only our individual contributions but also the collective dedication and unwavering commitment of the entire healthcare community.”

Kealey Griffiths, a University of Queensland medical student, received the 2024 AMA Indigenous Medical Scholarship.

Ms Griffiths said the $11,000 a year scholarship would relieve financial pressure and allow her to focus her efforts on her studies and medical placements as she sets her sights on a career in psychiatry.
