Welcoming the first cohort of the new MD program
We are thrilled that, after almost four years in the planning, our new MD Design Program launched on 30 January 2023. 483 eager Year 1 students were welcomed to UQ and the Medical School by Professor Deborah Terry AO, Vice Chancellor and President and by Professor Stuart Carney, Dean, Medical School. An Acknowledgement of Country was made by Kyle Ryan (third-year medical student) who shared his thoughts on being a future Indigenous doctor, along with the Nunukul Yuggera Aboriginal Dancers whose music and dancing was engaging and educational. The University of Queensland Medical Society (UQMS) President and third-year medical student, Prabasha Thilakaratne, introduced the activities and support available through the student society and shared his experience and advice with the new cohort emphasising the support services available within the Medical School and broader University.
Since that day students have been immersed in the new ‘Transition to the MD,’ a period of four weeks when they can settle into study, learn more about the six themes of the program, the significantly different program structure, meet many of the people who are here to support them to succeed in the Medical School and engage in all of the different learning experiences designed to optimise their learning.
All of the many staff involved have been absolute stars and together with the students are creating a wonderful learning environment where everyone will be supported to thrive and grow. A huge thanks to everyone involved.
