Introduction:

Delivery of effective healthcare depends on the successful collaboration and partnership between different health professionals, patients, family and the broader community. Health care is a team sport and it is critically important for health profession students to become familiar and proficient in the concept of Interprofessional Collaborative Practice. Opportunities for Interprofessional Education (IPE) and Interprofessional Learning (IPL) are abundant especially in the clinical years of training, but IPL activities are often haphazard and opportunistic. A structured and well-designed IPE curriculum that spans all years of training is needed to prepare students for their future role as professional in a team-based environment.

Aims:

This seminar will discuss the steps involved in design and implementation of an Interprofessional Collaborative Practice curriculum. The seminar will also showcase existing initiatives in the MD Community to create opportunities for interprofessional collaboration and learning and will explore ways to bring together the expertise and interest in this field that exists within the Faculty into a concerted and coordinated approach.

Program:

  1. Introduction (Professor Andy Teodorczuk)

  1. SILVER-Q as an example of a multidisciplinary program to allow medical students and nursing students to work together in a simulated hospital environment (15 min)

Presenter: Ms Samantha Ward

SILVER-Q is an interprofessional, multi-disciplinary teaching and learning program. In an immersive, simulated ward or emergency department environment, students from different disciplines work together using clinical problem-solving skills and knowledge to assess the situation, make a diagnosis and implement a management plan for their “patient/s”. As Clinical Skills and Simulation academic coordinator for the Rural Clinical School in Toowoomba, Sam will be presenting on how this program was set up, how it runs and how it is valued by their students.

  1. UQ Healthy Community Program (15 min)

Presenter: Dr Pieter Jansen

With support of a new-staff start-up grant, Pieter has conducted a trial of an interprofessional, community-based program in which interprofessional student teams worked with local community partners on a health-related question with a focus on the social and cultural context of health and healthcare. He will discuss the lessons that can be learnt to design authentic community-based IPE activities

  1. How to develop an Interprofessional Collaborative Practice Curriculum (15 min)

Presenter: A/Prof Neil Cottrell

Neil is the current Director, Interprofessional Education in the Faculty of HaBS and will share his experience as lead for the design and implementation of a collaborative practice curriculum in 2021 for 2nd and 3rd year students in the six schools in the HaBS Faculty.

  1. Discussion (15 min)
