Collaborators of the year award
Winners
The COVID-19 Spatial Biology Team
At the onset of the pandemic, the COVID-19 Spatial Biology Team applied world-first technology to spatially map COVID-19 rapid autopsy tissues. Working with collaborators in Australia and across the world they compared tissue samples from patients with influenza and COVID-19. The team used their range of skillsets including immunology, virology, bioinformatics and computational biology. Their research identified a gene which was multiple times higher in COVID-19 patients. This gene was tested at symptom onset in COVID-19 patients that had mild, moderate and severe COVID-19 disease onset, and it was found to be a triage biomarker for disease severity.

The Public Health Academic Program review
The Public Health Academic Program review team’s innovative approach to conduct simultaneous academic program reviews resulted in reduced duplication, and a longer timeframe to conduct more extensive stakeholder consultation and co-design process. One of the results of this approach was that the recommendations from the Academic Program Reviews gained universal approval from staff, students and industry stakeholders. The new program structures could also set new standards globally. And along with the team’s novel collaborative approach, the key outcomes are two new program structures that increase student experience, increase employability, and will increase the capacity of our graduates to improve public health.
