What are the specifications for the FoM HDR options?

General descriptions of our selected FoM HDR options are on our FoM HDR Computer Support page under option 1 or 2 in the first section. You can look up the specifications and current cost of our standard models. See FAQ - What other computers are in the UQeMarket catalogue and how much do they cost?

How much is the FoM HDR Computer subsidy and how much does my supervisor have to fund if I need a higher specification computer?

The prices of computers rise and fall from time to time. The FoM HDR Computer scheme will meet the full cost of our FoM HDR laptop and desktop options. The subsidy of any other laptop or desktop will be the cost, at time of ordering, of our FoM HDR option. You can look up the current cost of our selected models. See FAQ - What other computers are in the UQeMarket catalogue and how much do they cost?

What other computers are in the UQeMarket catalogue and how much do they cost?

Current devices are listed under "Purchasing a computer” on the ITS Purchasing page.

  • Note the key words and model/s.
  • To find out how much each item costs: Log in UQeMarket via UniFi (Staff log in required)
  • Go to eProcurement on the left panel and create a new requisition (you will not complete this requisition).
  • Scroll and select your Business Unit and click OK. Ignore all fields and click OK.
  • Select eMarket, under the Web group.
  • Enter your key words into the search field and search.
  • Select items to review.
  • Note the names, manufacturer catalogue number, supplier and price of each component.
  • Do not complete the requisition.  Log out of UniFi without completing the requisition.
  • Request FoM HDR Computer Support and initiate the ordering process by submitting a FoM HDR computing support request.

My HDR project needs a higher specification computer – why doesn’t the FoM HDR Computer Support scheme fully fund what I need for my project?

The intention of the faculty scheme is to provide our HDR students with a UQ-supported desktop or laptop. The FoM options are the standard models that meet the requirements of most UQ staff and students. If your HDR project work needs a higher specification computer, then we regard that as a project cost specific to your project. We will subsidise the higher specification computer to the price of our FoM HDR option.

Why are there limited options in the UQeMarket catalogue?

See the explanation on ITS’s Desktop, laptop and tablets web page.

Can I change my computer?

We only provide one computer to HDR students and would need an exceptional and unanticipated reason to consider a request to change the computer issued to a student. Re-profiling computers creates work, and we need to re-deploy a used computer with a shorter warranty/life expectancy to another HDR student. It is best to carefully consider what you need from the start.

I didn’t request a computer when I started and have been using my own/my group’s computer. How late in my candidature can I request a FoM HDR computer?

You can apply any time if you need a computer and haven’t been given one via this scheme. Our research office team may contact you if we need more information. We’d like to know what you have been using up to that point and why you need something now. Depending on your expected submission timeline, we may provide a mid-warranty computer or make clear arrangements about the end-of-candidature process for returning a recently issued computer with plenty of warranty time left.

I’m part time and my computer is out of warranty and playing up. Can I request a replacement?

This would be a reasonable exception to our one computer per HDR candidate rule.  Please put in a student IT Support request to have the device assessed.  Contact med.research@uq.edu.au if ITS say the computer needs to be replaced. This will be assessed case-by-case, but we may provide a mid-warranty computer or make clear arrangements about the end-of-candidature process for returning a recently issued computer with plenty of warranty time left.

Can a student or someone else in the group submit the form instead of their advisor?

Yes, if the advisor tells them to. Whoever submits the form is declaring that the advisor supports the request. When they provide a chart string for any additional costs, they are declaring that the advisor or budget holder has agreed to this cost. The advisor will be included in our approval communication and the student will be identified against the computer cost in the budget holder’s financial reporting.

Can I use my computer at home, or take it to a conference or to work at another location?

Talk to your advisor first about needing to work at home or another location and seek School/Centre approval to take your UQ IT equipment off campus. See more ITS information on Accessing IT systems and software remotely.

Can I keep my computer when I finish my HDR candidature?

Most computers will be well-used by the end of a 3–4-year HDR candidature and near the end of their warranty period.  However, they remain an asset of UQ, with both monetary and usefulness value. If your advisor does not need the computer for another user, please contact med.research@uq.edu.au for an assessment and to ask about our process to acquire your device.  If approved, the acquisition will be of the hardware only. Whether used by another user or acquired by the student at end of candidature, every device will need to be returned to factory settings, all software and data deleted, and the device removed from UQ’s asset register. If acquired by the student, UQ ITS will no longer support the device and any remaining warranty is unlikely to transfer.
