About the building

UQ's Mayne Medical School, named after benefactors James and Mary Emelia Mayne, has been the home of UQ's medical community since 1937. The building remains in its original structure and offers visitors a rare chance to step back in time. Towering columns create a grand entrance, while inside a heritage-approved renovation completed in 2020 has revitalised the space to include state-of-the-art conference and event facilities. Executive and administration offices are situated on each level, in addition to teaching and lecture theatres. Mystery and legends have been perfectly captured in the revitalised Marks-Hirschfeld Museum of Medical History exhibits throughout the building. We welcome alumni and friends to return home to the Mayne Medical School and host their next event in this premier function venue full of character.

ES Meyers Lecture Theatre

ES Meyers Lecture Theatre was named in honour of Errol Solomon Meyers, an ardent campaigner for the establishment of a Medical School for Queensland. He was actively involved in medical education throughout his professional life. He initiated the first postgraduate courses for medicine in Queensland, was instrumental in the formation of an Anatomy School, became the first licensed anatomist in Queensland, was actively engaged in the establishment of the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Queensland and was member of the first Faculty of Dentistry. Meyers, second Dean of the Faculty of Medicine from 1942 to 1955, presided over an era of significant change and in this founding role is recognised for his major contribution to the establishment and development of medical education in Queensland.
